Oakland City University, or OCU for short, is a coeducational, small-town urban private university located in Oakland City, which is the 2nd largest city and the 3rd largest community in Gibson County, situated in the US state of Indiana, having a population estimated at a number of nearly 2 600 inhabitants, during the 2000 census. Oakland City is best known for the fact that it is home of Oakland City University.
OCU was established in 1885, but due to the lack of funds, its construction was not completed until 1891, when it already opened its doors to students. In its early days, the institution was called ''the college on the hill'', because of its location, its current name being adopted in the 1990's, when the college moved to university status under Dr. Murray's leadership.
Today, OCU has an enrollment of approximately 2000 students, and stands fully accredited, offering five graduate degrees and over forty undergraduate programs, in numerous fields of study, through several schools and departments, which include: the School of Arts and Sciences, School of Education, School of Adult and Extended learning and the Chapman School of Religious Study.
OCU's athletic teams are known as the Mighty Oaks, who compete in 21 sports, for both men and women, in NCAA Division II. Their distinctive colors are white and Columbia blue.
